Kolasib
Kolasib is a district in the State of Mizoram in India. This District is situated between 23° 70' S and 24° 50' N Latitude and 92° 50' W – 93° E Longitude. It is bounded by Cachar District and Hailakandi District , Assam on the north and north west respectively. On the south and east by Aiawl District, Mizoram and on the south west by Mamit District, Mizoram.The total area of the district is 1472.12 Sq km.
Population in the District as per Census 2001 is 65960.
For the purpose of general and development administration, the district has been divided into 3(three) Sub-Divisions viz. Kolasib Sadar, Vairengte and Kawnpui and 2(two) R.D. Block, i.e. Thingdawl and Bilkhawthlir for the purpose of general and development administration.
History
Kolasib was initially created as the centre of Tribal Development Block on the day of the birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation in 1957 and was manned by Project Executive Officer. It was later upgraded to be administered by the Area Administrative Officer. When Mizoram elevated to a Union Territory in 1972, Kolasib was upgraded as the headquarters of Sub-Division manned by Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil) on 5 th May, 1975.Being the seat of administration for more than three long decades its present status of District was created by the Government of Mizoram following the trifurcation of Aizawl District in 1998.
